G20 Summit: South Korea, India to forge deeper cooperation in economy, security

At the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held two back‑to‑back meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the presidential office confirmed on Sunday.

During the sit‑down with Modi, Lee said he hoped to deepen ties in the economy, culture, and security, as well as boost people‑to‑people exchanges. Modi complimented South Korea’s high‑tech shipbuilding expertise and a small‑group framework for future‑oriented industries, and he expressed a desire to expand joint work in the defence sector, the office added.

The office released a statement quoting, “The two leaders agreed on the need to boost bilateral cooperation in various areas, such as artificial intelligence and the defence industry, and push for working‑level consultations.”

Modi invited Lee to visit India, and Lee responded that he would gladly travel there to further strengthen relations.

Separately, Lee and Lula explored ways to strengthen cooperation across the public and private sectors in the economy, culture, and security, and they discussed policy issues like income redistribution and democracy. Each president also welcomed the idea of visiting the other’s country.

While the G20 was underway, Lee also met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Saturday.

Lee said his government will look at improving voting rights for Koreans abroad, including the possibility of electronic voting. He pointed out that many of roughly 4,000 Korean nationals in South Africa travel long distances to reach polling stations and suggested an electronic system to ease that burden.

“Even political parties use electronic voting to elect their leaders,” Lee said. “Its stability has already been verified, so there is no issue.”
