NHRC Steps In Over Doctor Shortage Crisis at Faridabad ESIC Hospital
In a swift move, India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has jumped into action after spotting a troubling media report about the ESIC super speciality hospital in Faridabad, Haryana. The hospital is struggling with a severe lack of doctors and basic infrastructure, leaving patients in a tough spot.
The report paints a grim picture: Over 6.5 lakh ESIC cardholders from Palwal and Faridabad, plus folks from nearby areas like Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram, rely on this hospital for critical treatments. We’re talking serious conditions such as heart diseases, cancer, neurology issues, and intestinal infections. But things aren’t going smoothly—patients face long waits, even in the emergency ward, sometimes for hours on end.
What’s worse? The cardiology department hasn’t had a full-time doctor for the last month. Specialist doctors are only showing up part-time, and the Dean of the ESIC Medical College openly admitted that no specialist doctors are available right now. If this turns out to be true, NHRC says it points to major human rights violations, hitting at people’s right to timely healthcare and dignity.
Acting on its own— that’s what "suo motu" means—NHRC has fired off notices to the Haryana Chief Secretary and the Chairman of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). They want a detailed report on the hospital’s doctor shortage, infrastructure problems, and patient hardships within two weeks. This could push for quick fixes to ease the suffering.
For those new to it, NHRC is India’s top human rights watchdog, set up under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It works to safeguard rights like life, liberty, equality, and dignity, as promised in our Constitution and global agreements. The best part? NHRC doesn’t wait for complaints—it can act on news reports or public info to protect human rights in cases like this healthcare mess.
Stay tuned as this ESIC hospital crisis unfolds; better access to medical care shouldn’t be this hard for anyone.
