IMD issues yellow alert in Delhi-NCR; rain, thunderstorms expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Monday, warning that Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) will see light to moderate showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Weather update

  • Winds are expected to reach 30‑40 km/h across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram.
  • Intermittent rain will fall throughout the day, with the highest temperature around 32 °C and the lowest near 24 °C.
  • Even after the rain, high humidity may leave the air sticky and uncomfortable.

The changes follow a strong western disturbance moving across north‑west India, bringing more cloud cover, rain and cooler breezes to the area over the next 48 hours.

Recent rain and alerts

Early Monday, heavy downpours battered parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram. The IMD put the national capital and Gurugram on an orange alert – a higher warning level – while Noida and Ghaziabad remained on yellow, indicating a moderate risk of weather‑related disruptions.

On Sunday, Delhi’s temperature peaked at 34.1 °C – just below the seasonal average – and fell to 24.2 °C at night, slightly above normal.

Air quality

Rain and the strong winds lifted Delhi’s air quality. On Saturday the 24‑hour Average Air Quality Index (AQI) was 138, classified as moderate. Friday’s AQI of 88 was the best since post‑Dussehra in three years. The moderate condition broke a 21‑day streak, but AQI may still vary as the weather changes.

Safety tips

The IMD urges people to stay alert during thunderstorms. Avoid open areas, keep away from tall trees and secure loose items that could be blown away by wind gusts.

Stay tuned for further updates from the IMD and local authorities.
