Shah Rukh Khan pays tribute to Dharmendra: Your soul will live through your films

In Mumbai on November 24, the press agency LatestNewsX reported that Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan expressed his sorrow over the death of veteran actor Dharmendra, who passed away earlier that week.

Khan posted a nostalgic photo of the two stars on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter). In his caption he wrote, “Rest in Peace Dharam ji. You were nothing short of a father figure to me… thank u for showering me with blessings and love the way you did. An inconsolable and irreplaceable loss to not just his family, but to cinema and film lovers world over”. He added that “You are immortal, and your soul will live through your films and your beautiful family forever. Love you always”.

Dharmendra, who was born in Punjab in 1935, remains one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring icons. His entry into films began after winning a national talent search in 1958—a contest organized by Filmfare alongside Bimal Roy Productions—that also later found Rajesh Khanna. His screen charisma and natural charm grabbed the audience’s attention, and he quickly became a household name.

His career spanned a wide range of genres—romance, action, comedy—showcasing versatility that set him apart. Early hits like Phool Aur Patthar cemented him as a leading man, while his memorable role as the playful hero Veeru in Sholay has remained etched in popular memory. In recognition of his contributions, Dharmendra was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third‑highest civilian honour.
