Biden was warned his soft-on-immigration proposals would cause ‘chaos’ — but he ignored it, damning memo reveals

Former President Joe Biden was told by his advisers that shifting his immigration strategy could trigger “chaos” at the U.S. border – but the memo that surfaced recently shows he ignored the warning.

The advice first appeared back in 2020, when the Biden team was still running against President Trump. Their notes were part of the campaign’s policy playbook.

The advisers cautioned that a surge of migrants could create a “humanitarian crisis”, overwhelm processing capacity, and jeopardize the new administration’s agenda. They pointed out that a combination of a lingering backlog from the Trump era and COVID‑related disruptions could fuel a huge influx under the new approach.

In response, the team outlined practical steps the 83‑year‑old leader could take to blunt the tide of illegal crossings, such as simplifying ways to reject immigration claims.

Biden chose to set that advice aside.

A few months after the inauguration, the same advisers urged the administration to tighten border enforcement and crack down on crossings. Yet the call was again met with resistance, as top aides warned that a hard‑line stance would alienate progressive voters and that most Americans living outside of border states didn’t see immigration as a pressing concern.
