‘SAKSHAM’: India’s new eye in the sky to neutralise aerial threats

Indian forces are gearing up to beat the growing drone threat on the battlefield.
After Operation Sindoor, when Indian security teams shot down almost 400 Pakistani drones, the army is now buying a new, home‑grown system called SAKSHAM (Situational Awareness for Kinetic Soft and Hard Kill Assets Management).

The SAKSHAM Counter‑Unmanned Aerial System (CUAS) Grid lets soldiers spot, track, identify and neutralise hostile drones in real‑time. It covers the so‑called Tactical Battlefield Space (TBS) – the air side of the battlefield from the ground up to 3,000 metres (10,000 feet).

“We’re moving beyond a land‑only view of combat,” said an army official. “Future wars will happen in the sky right above the ground, and we need to keep that airspace under our control.”

The system was designed in partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Ghaziabad. It forms a high‑end, modular command‑and‑control hub that fuses data from own and enemy UAVs, CUAS sensors and both soft and hard‑kill weapons on a single, GIS‑based platform.

Key features include:

  • AI‑powered threat analysis – predicts enemy drone movements for faster decisions.
  • Real‑time visualisation – provides field commanders with a live picture of the air domain.
  • Scalable architecture – can be upgraded as new drone technologies emerge.

Because the system is fully Indian‑made, it fits the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ defence vision. Production has been fast‑tracked through the Fast‑Track Procurement route, with all army units expected to have the system in a year.

As modern conflicts – from Russia‑Ukraine to Israel‑Palestine and South Asia – increasingly rely on drones for surveillance and attacks, SAKSHAM offers a comprehensive counter‑drone answer that keeps the Indian Army ready on both ground and in the air.
