Records set to tumble at Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka

The Women’s World Cup is back in India and Sri Lanka, and it’s bringing plenty of excitement as top players chase some of cricket’s biggest records. With batters and bowlers ready to shine, the ICC Women’s World Cup could see history rewritten right before our eyes.

Let’s start with the run-scoring throne. New Zealand’s Debbie Hockley holds the all-time record with 1,501 runs from the 2000 tournament, and no one’s touched it since. India’s Mithali Raj came close with 1,321 runs but couldn’t break through. Now, veteran Suzie Bates from New Zealand sits just 322 runs behind. With at least seven matches ahead, Bates has a real shot at becoming the leading run-scorer in Women’s World Cup history.

Don’t count out India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who’s racked up 876 runs and ranks in the top 12 all-time. England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, with 805 runs, is right there too. If either has a big tournament, they could climb into the elite group of Women’s World Cup run-getters.

On the highest score front, Australia’s Belinda Clark set the bar high nearly 30 years ago with an unbeaten 229 against Denmark in 1997. Expect batting-friendly pitches this time around, so keep an eye on modern power-hitters who might finally challenge that iconic Women’s World Cup knock.

For centuries, four players share the record with four each. Sciver-Brunt and Bates are playing this edition and could become the first to hit a fifth. Harmanpreet, already with three, isn’t far off either—another record ripe for the taking in the ICC Women’s World Cup.

Bowlers have their own battles brewing. India’s Jhulan Goswami leads with 43 wickets in Women’s World Cup history, but challengers are closing in fast. Australia’s Megan Schutt has 34, South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp sits at 32, and teammate Ellyse Perry has 31. A strong showing from any of them could dethrone Goswami as the top wicket-taker.

This tournament feels extra special with five players stepping into their fifth Women’s World Cup: Bates, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, Kapp, Perry, and Harmanpreet Kaur. Their experience adds real depth to the competition.

And for the ultimate bowling feat, New Zealand’s Jackie Lord owns the best figures ever—a stunning 6 wickets for 10 runs against India in 1982. Only three others have grabbed six wickets in a match: teammate Glenys Page (6/20), England’s Sophie Ecclestone (6/36), and Anya Shrubsole (6/46). Will someone top that in this ICC Women’s World Cup? It’s one of the intriguing storylines to follow.
