Delta Air Lines plane slides off runway upon icy landing in Des Moines International Airport

In Des Moines, a Delta Air Lines jet lost traction on the icy strip of the airport’s runway at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday night, skidding away as the heavy winter storm rolled into the Midwest. All 58 passengers were brought off the plane safely, and no one was hurt, says Sarah Hoodjer, the airport’s Communications Manager. The aircraft had been cruising from Detroit, Michigan, without incident until the landing touched slick ice at Des Moines International Airport. Delta said, “Safety comes before all else and we apologize to our customers for the experience.” The airport’s regular services remain on hold, but officials expect it to be open again by mid‑afternoon.
The ferocious cold front hammered large parts of the central United States over the weekend, dumping a lot of snow and disturbing travel plans. In the Chicago area, flight cancellations spiked to over 1,000 within a 24‑hour span, and more disruptions are likely to follow as the storm settles. Additionally, there were reports of hundreds of crashes across the region on Saturday.
