Hyderabad: Woman, 9 others held for husband’s kidnap

Hyderabad police say they have taken a woman and nine others into custody over a kidnapping plot that aimed to ransom her husband’s husband.
M. Madhavi Latha, 55, is the main suspect. Police allege that she hired a team of men to abduct her husband, Mantri Shyam, after he sold a family property worth ₹20 crore.

Shyam went missing on 29 October in the Amberpet neighbourhood. He was held for only two days, escaping on 31 October before authorities could recover him. The raid came after the police received a missing‑persons complaint and quickly formed a special unit to track him.

According to Deputy Commissioner B. Bala Swamy, four suspects are still at large. Latha allegedly promised the kidnappers ₹1 crore for their work. The charged men reportedly moved Shyam across several vehicles to Vijayawada, demanding ₹10 lakhs for his release. The next day they brought him back to Hyderabad, where Shyam tried to withdraw the ransom at a bank in Banjara Hills but managed to escape before the money could be paid.

Investigators say the primary goal of the operation was to seize Shyam’s property and possibly kill him, while some participants were motivated solely by the potential ransom. Latha ordered Durga Vinay and others to spy on Shyam; they, with the help of Durga Prasad and a team of 10, carried out the kidnapping on 29 October from a flat in DD Colony near the Amberpet police station.

Police note that the kidnappers had rehearsed the plan, renting a flat next to Shyam’s home and monitoring his movements before the abduction. The accused failed to collect the ransom because Shyam escaped. Police continue to hunt the four suspects who remain missing.
