Moroccan Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira

Morocco’s top industry official, Omar Hejira, visited New Delhi this week to boost ties between India and Morocco, spotlighting the North African nation’s key role in global trade and its potential for stronger economic partnerships.

“My visit to India is important to improve relations between India and Morocco,” Hejira told during his trip. He stressed the growing chances for bilateral cooperation and explained why Morocco matters to India. “It’s strategically located with strong links to African and European countries. Plus, we have free trade agreements with the US, African nations, and Arab countries,” he said.

Hejira brought along a high-powered delegation, showing how seriously Morocco takes these talks. He even invited Indian teams to visit: “Any delegation from India is welcome to come to Morocco and explore it.”

Building on that, Morocco’s Ambassador to India, Mohamed Maliki, shared updates on Wednesday at the Millennial India International Chamber of Commerce event. He said Morocco is pushing to balance its trade with India and expand partnerships in key areas like industry and agriculture.

“We’re working on the trade deficit—it’s in Morocco’s best interest,” Maliki explained. “I’m sure there are many ways to balance this trade, and it will happen soon.”

Maliki highlighted Morocco’s big role in India’s food security through fertilizer supplies. “We’re a major contributor to India’s security via fertilizers—it’s crucial for your food needs,” he noted.

Both nations share a commitment to open economies, he added. “Morocco and India are very open countries with dynamic markets. Protectionism isn’t a long-term fix; we need openness to attract investments and create jobs.”

The ambassador tied this to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Voice of the South initiative, which focuses on opportunities among developing countries. “PM Modi talks about exploring these chances between nations like ours—it’s a great opportunity for India-Morocco relations,” Maliki said.

He also pointed to the Arab world’s potential for more trade, exchanges, and investments with India. “India is a reliable partner with a strong economy. The Arab region is growing fast, with huge needs and investment opportunities.”

This delegation, led by Hejira—a key figure in King Mohammed VI’s cabinet—underscores Morocco’s priority on ties with New Delhi.

On the defense side, Maliki noted a recent win: India’s Ministry of Defence just opened Morocco’s first defense facility outside India. “This shows our deep strategic partnership and trust, especially in the defense industry,” he said.

Looking forward, both sides see plenty of untapped potential. “There are so many opportunities we haven’t explored yet,” Maliki wrapped up. “We need to connect people and make it happen.”
