In a heartwarming cross-cultural gesture, Japanese Sumo wrestler Jokoryu Takayuki celebrated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday by performing the traditional Shiomaki ritual. The youngest Sumo star threw salt in Tokyo’s wrestling ring to purify spirits and chase away evil, all while sending his best wishes to Modi. The Indian Minorities Foundation shared this special moment on X as part of Japan’s Vishwa Sewa Pakhwada.
Rooted in ancient Shinto traditions, the Shiomaki ritual cleanses the space and boosts strength—perfect for honoring a leader like Modi. Jokoryu, beaming with enthusiasm, told Modi in Japanese, “Tanjoubi Omedetou—Modi” (Happy Birthday, Modi). He added a personal touch: “Modi, you are a winner; I am also a winner. We both win battles.” Jokoryu also shared his excitement, saying, “I look forward to seeing even more great things from you in the future. Keep up the great work.”
This birthday tribute highlights the growing bonds between Japan and India, blending Sumo culture with Modi’s global influence. Back home in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kicked off a nationwide Service Fortnight, or Sewa Pakhwada, on Modi’s birthday. The campaign runs until October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, which also honors former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
The BJP’s initiative echoes Modi’s lifelong passion for public service, a commitment he brought from his days as Gujarat Chief Minister to leading the nation. Starting September 17, the party teams up with central and state governments for a flurry of activities. Expect welfare drives for the poor, cleanliness campaigns, better access to clean water, environmental protection efforts, and spotlights on key government schemes. The focus stays on sustainability and reaching out to marginalized communities, true to Modi’s view that politics must uplift the underprivileged.
