GHMC orders closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops on October 2nd for Gandhi Jayanthi

Hyderabad’s Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is shutting down all slaughterhouses, meat shops, and beef outlets across the city on October 2 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, known as Gandhi Jayanti.

The order comes straight from GHMC’s rules under Section 533(b) of the 1955 GHMC Act, backed by a recent committee resolution on September 24. Officials are urging everyone involved to pitch in for smooth enforcement, with city staff keeping a close eye to respect the holiday’s importance.

This isn’t the first time—back in August, GHMC closed similar spots for two days around Independence Day on August 15 and Janmashtami on August 16, joining a trend seen in many Indian cities.

But the move drew fire last time from AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. He called out the Independence Day meat ban as unfair, arguing it clashes with people’s freedoms, including their right to food choices, privacy, jobs, culture, and religious practices. In a social media post, Owaisi pointed out how other municipal bodies followed suit, but questioned why celebrating freedom should limit everyday livelihoods.
