Bangladesh police say they have arrested 1,649 people in just one day after the International Crimes Tribunal handed a death sentence to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The verdict sparked vandalism across the country, with more than 40 cars set on fire and homemade bombs detonating in several towns.
The tribunal found Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity for her role in July’s protests. It also sentenced her former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al‑Mamun to five years in prison after he gave evidence against his colleagues.
In the past 24 hours police seized 10 guns, over 30 kg of gunpowder, ammunition and cocktail bombs, according to the police media wing. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch also took five Awami League leaders and activists into custody during raids across the capital.
Police said the raids will continue as they try to stop sabotage and violent processions while legal proceedings against those arrested are underway.
Violence erupted in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi‑32 area after the verdict. Clashes with police left up to 50 people, including security staff, injured. Dhanmondi‑32 is also home to the childhood house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding father and Hasina’s father.
Protestors blocked highways in Dhaka and elsewhere and clashed with security forces. Police used batons, sound grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Later that night, the house of former President Abdul Hamid in Kishoreganj district was attacked and vandalised. A small mob of 20‑30 men entered the former president’s home after a demonstration celebrating Hasina’s sentencing.
The country remains tense after the tribunal’s decision, as protests and security forces clash over the fate of a democratically‑elected former prime minister.
