Ex-Andhra Minister Jogi Ramesh sent to judicial custody in spurious liquor case

In Vijayawada, a court kept former minister Jogi Ramesh and his brother Jogi Ramu in judicial custody until November 13 after the spurious liquor case that has rattled Andhra Pradesh spirals further.

The brothers were arrested Sunday night by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is probing the alleged production of fake liquor. Police took them from Jogi Ramesh’s home in Ibrahimpatnam, NTR district, and held them for a 12‑hour interrogation at the local excise office. After a medical check in midnight, the team produced them before a magistrate at his residence early Monday morning. At 5 a.m., the magistrate ordered that the duo remain in custody, and the police moved them to Vijayawada jail.

The SIT’s investigation hinges on allegations from Addepalli Janardhana Rao, the prime accused in the case. In a viral video, Rao claims that while he had stopped producing fake liquor after the TDP‑led NDA came to power, Jogi Ramesh phoned him in April and asked him to start again. Rao also says Jogi promised him ₹3 crore to open a distillery in Africa. Rao further claimed Jogi had visited his house in Ibrahimpatnam on September 23, 2023, to discuss the operation before leaving for Africa.

Jogi Ramesh has said the state police investigation is biased and politically driven. He filed a petition yesterday in the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case, arguing that only a national agency can give an impartial investigation. He also asked the court to transfer the investigations of two FIRs filed at Mulakalacheruvu and Bhavanipuram police stations to the CBI, and to look into a complaint he filed on October 15 after seeing Janardhana Rao’s recorded statement, which he says was made under duress.

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has condemned Jogi Ramesh’s arrest, calling it illegal and a political distraction. Party president and former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of using this arrest to divert attention from the party’s own alleged involvement in the spurious liquor scandal.

As the investigation continues, the case remains a headline‑grabber in Andhra Pradesh politics, with closely watched court decisions and calls for a CBI inquiry keeping the public and media on edge.
