Pant to check into BCCI Centre of Excellence for fractured foot rehab

Rishabh Pant, India’s dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, is set to kick off his recovery journey at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He’s expected to arrive there on Monday to start rehab for a fractured right foot he picked up during the England Test series. This last-minute decision comes after Pant’s cast was removed, and he’s now walking comfortably without any limp—great news for his fans!

After returning from the UK, Pant consulted top medical experts, including renowned doctor Dinshaw Pardiwala from Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Dr. Pardiwala, who previously performed life-saving surgery on Pant’s right knee following his horrific car accident in December 2022, has been monitoring his foot fracture progress closely.

Remember that dramatic moment? It happened on day one of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in July. Pant, aged 27, inside-edged a reverse sweep from Chris Woakes onto his boot, forcing him to retire hurt on 37. Scans confirmed a fracture in his fifth metatarsal, but the fighter returned the next day in a moonboot and scored a gritty 54. Dhruv Jurel stepped in for wicketkeeping duties, and India drew the match thanks to centuries from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. For the thrilling fifth Test win at The Oval—which leveled the series 2-2—N. Jagadeesan joined as a backup but Jurel took the role.

On Tuesday, the CoE medical team will assess Pant’s right foot to map out his rehab plan. This check-up will decide how intense the recovery will be and whether he’ll be fit for the upcoming two-Test series against West Indies. The matches are scheduled in Ahmedabad from October 2-6 and New Delhi from October 10-14—crucial games for Team India.

Pant shone brightly in the England series, smashing 479 runs in seven innings at an impressive average of 68.42, including two centuries in the Headingley opener. As India’s Test vice-captain, his return would boost the side immensely. If he doesn’t make it in time, Jurel or Jagadeesan could fill the wicketkeeper-batter spot against West Indies. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery—Pant is key to India’s white-ball and Test success!
