Govt launches nationwide airport checks as IndiGo disruption triggers high-level review

New Delhi, Dec 9 – The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched a 24‑hour, exhaustive inspection of airport operations across India as IndiGo’s ongoing disruptions keep piling up passenger delays.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu explained that senior officials were dispatched to key airports to get a first‑hand look at conditions and to make sure that stranded or delayed travelers got help promptly.

On X, the minister posted a detailed update, saying the Ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have been “constantly monitoring the situation across all the airports in real‑time since 3rd December”, the day irregularities in IndiGo’s schedule began to ripple through the country.

He called the situation “extraordinary circumstances” that demanded immediate, high‑level action from the top of the aviation sector.

A senior‑level review meeting was held Sunday night, with all ministry and DGCA officials in attendance.

The aim was a full‑scale audit of how airports are operating, how airlines are responding, and what service level passengers experiencing delays or cancellations are receiving.

During the meeting, minister Naidu instructed officials to head out immediately to airports nationwide. Their job is to inspect ground operations, talk to passengers, verify how airlines are handling the crisis, and spot any gaps in passenger services—be it communication lags, overcrowding, or poor terminal support.

“Any shortcomings identified, including feedback received through interactions with passengers, are to be addressed and rectified immediately,” Minister Naidu wrote.

The push is in response to a flurry of complaints on social media about long queues, slow check‑in, and unclear flight rescheduling information.

IndiGo, the country’s biggest carrier by market share, has been battling operational hurdles since early this week, throwing several busy hubs—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad—into chaos.

Although the minister didn’t disclose the root cause or a timetable for things to smooth out, insiders say the government’s top priority right now is to stabilize ground processes and keep passengers updated with timely help and alternative travel options.

The Civil Aviation Ministry plans to release a more detailed advisory once the initial findings from the airport visits are compiled and reviewed within the next 24 hours.
