Five dead — including three children — after stolen car crashes on Colorado highway

Five people lost their lives, including three children, when a stolen vehicle crashed into traffic on Highway 83 in Douglas County, Colorado, on Monday afternoon. The accident involved a Toyota hatchback and a Ford sedan and took place just before 4:40 p.m. near milepost 40.5. The Toyota was heading south when its 31‑year‑old Denver driver lost control, clipped the right shoulder, and spun into the northbound lane. Authorities are unsure why the car went off the road. The vehicle spun, ejected its driver, and slammed head‑on into the Ford, which was carrying a 35‑year‑old Colorado Springs man and five passengers.

Officials identified the five youths as a 13‑year‑old girl, an 8‑year‑old boy, a 12‑year‑old girl, a 12‑year‑old boy, and a 14‑year‑old boy, all from Colorado Springs. The 35‑year‑old passenger, the 8‑year‑old boy, and both 12‑year‑olds were pronounced dead at the scene. The 13‑year‑old girl and the 14‑year‑old boy, seated in the rear, were air‑lifted to a local hospital with life‑threatening injuries.

According to Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the Toyota had been reported stolen by the Aurora Police Department about an hour before the crash. The case is now being investigated by the CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit.
