On Wednesday in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told a rally of protestors that the state legislature will table a resolution on October 14 to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and push the Union government to step up its efforts to bring the war to an end.
The speech came as a group of activists from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and allies of the DMK staged a protest against Israel’s strikes on Gaza. Stalin spoke outside Rajarathnam Stadium in Egmore, urging all parties to back the resolution that would reflect the people’s voice.
He slammed the Israeli Defence Forces for what he said were “indiscriminate bombings” that violate international human‑rights rules and UN norms, noting that the world was shaken by the violence.
Stalin cited the toll of the conflict: “More than 50,000 people have died so far, including 11,000 women and 17,000 children. Sixty‑two hundred reporters and UN staff have been killed,” he said. “About 26,000 children have lost their parents, and over 100,000 injured are still receiving treatment. Huge parts of Gaza are destroyed, yet its people keep resisting the Israeli invasion.”
He highlighted a recent tragedy in which 45 Palestinians waiting for food aid were killed. “Volunteers from 47 countries who came with milk powder and other relief supplies were detained,” Stalin said. “Can we stay silent while Israel breaks international law? We have to speak up.”
Stalin called on the central government to work with international organisations to press for an end to the war and to ensure humanitarian access. He stressed that peace and human rights are universal, describing human life as priceless and urging protection for all civilians.
The resolution would also ask for aid to Gaza – food, medicine, and support to rebuild – and for the release of all prisoners held there.
The protest drew several political leaders, including Tamil Nadu Congress president Selvaperunthagai, CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam, CPI(M) leaders K. Balakrishnan and U. Vasuki, CPI state secretary M. Veerapandian, and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi chief M.H. Jawahirullah.
