Mumbai’s cricket scene just got a big shake-up. Former Delhi cricketer Mithun Manhas steps in as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The election happened at the BCCI’s 94th Annual General Meeting on Sunday, where everything went smoothly with no rivals challenging the candidates.
Rajeev Shukla grabs another term as vice-president, and Devajit Saikia stays on as secretary. Prabhtej Singh Bhatia takes over as joint secretary from Rohan Gauns Desai, while Raghuram Bhat lands the treasurer spot. Saikia, the secretary, noted that the entire apex council got elected without any pushback.
Manhas fills a vacancy left by Roger Binny, who stepped down in August last year. Shukla had been handling president duties in the meantime. At 45, Manhas becomes just the third ex-player to lead BCCI, following Sourav Ganguly and Binny. He built his career playing domestic cricket for Delhi before switching to Jammu and Kashmir, where he also coached.
“It’s an absolute honor to lead the world’s top cricket board,” Manhas said after his win. “But it’s a massive responsibility too. I promise to give it my all with full dedication and passion.”
Other key moves include Jaydev Shah from the Saurashtra Cricket Association joining the apex council, and Arun Dhumal holding onto his role as chairman of the IPL Governing Council.
In selection committee news, former India stars R.P. Singh and Pragyan Ojha join the men’s panel under Ajit Agarkar. For juniors, ex-Tamil Nadu batter S. Sharath becomes chairman, teaming up with Harvinder Sodhi, Pathik Patel, Krishna Mohan, and Ranadeb Bose.
On the women’s side, Amita Sharma takes the chairperson role for the selection panel, succeeding Neetu David. She’ll work with Shyama Dey, Jaya Sharma, Sulakshana Naik, and Sravanthi Naidu.
These changes signal fresh energy for Indian cricket as BCCI gears up for more exciting matches and tournaments ahead.
