Farmers in Haryana are celebrating the Indian government’s latest boost to minimum support prices (MSP) for key rabi crops, hailing it as a special “Diwali bumper gift” from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They say the move shows Modi’s ongoing commitment to supporting the farming community.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Modi, greenlit the MSP hikes on Wednesday for the 2026-27 marketing season. This step aims to give farmers fair returns on their hard work and push for more crop diversification to strengthen agriculture.
In Hisar district, local farmers shared their excitement with . Subhash, who farms 10 acres in Gangwa village, called the announcement a game-changer for incomes. “This is truly a Diwali bumper gift,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi always stands up for farmers, and this will help us raise our living standards. I thank PM Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for making it happen.”
Shyam Sundar Sharma, with 11 acres to his name, pointed to the Rs 160 jump in wheat MSP as a real win. “We fully support this decision,” he added. “The BJP government cares about farmers’ welfare more than any before.”
Balwan Singh from the same village noted that Modi’s administration has delivered MSP increases every year. “This steady help motivates us to produce more and keeps farming strong,” he said.
Official figures show the new MSPs offer solid profits: 109% above production costs for wheat, 93% for rapeseed and mustard, 89% for lentils, 59% for gram, 58% for barley, and 50% for safflower. The biggest hike hits safflower at Rs 600 per quintal, with lentils up Rs 300, rapeseed and mustard at Rs 250, gram at Rs 225, barley at Rs 170, and wheat at Rs 160.
This aligns with the 2018-19 Union Budget promise to set MSP at least 1.5 times the all-India average production cost, ensuring long-term stability for India’s rabi crop farmers.
