In the wake of alarming reports about dozens of children dying after taking contaminated cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, authorities in Maharashtra have stepped up their response.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) division in Pune has begun a sweeping campaign to test cough syrups from shops and factories across the district. Acting on orders from both state and central government officials, the FDA is collecting samples and sending them to official labs for testing. So far, no stock of the “Coldrif” cough syrup—linked to the child deaths—has been found in Pune.
Dr. Girish Hukare, the FDA’s Joint Commissioner for Drugs, told reporters that a state‑wide sweep has already uncovered traces of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical that can cause kidney and liver failure, in products from two Maharashtra‑based pharmaceutical firms. Those stocks were seized, and a detailed investigation is underway.
In a separate operation, FDA officials raided a manufacturing plant in Wadki, near Pune, taking control of cough syrup inventory worth about ₹13 lakh and seizing an additional ₹9 000 worth of stock in Satara district. Samples from the raid will be analyzed, and follow‑up actions will depend on the results.
Madhya Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister, Rajendra Shukla, said the state government has reacted swiftly to the tragedy. He confirmed that the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals—the Tamil Nadu‑based company that produces Coldrif—has been arrested and will be brought on transit remand. Shukla also noted that the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up and that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has visited affected families in Chhindwara, underscoring the government’s commitment to prevent such medicines from re-entering the market.
The FDA and state officials are urging stricter oversight of cough syrup manufacturing to safeguard public health and restore consumer confidence.
