Himachal Pradesh’s brutal monsoon season has claimed 430 lives between June 20 and September 20, leaving communities reeling from landslides, flash floods, and other disasters, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).
Out of these tragedies, 245 deaths stemmed directly from heavy rains—think landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, and even electrocution. Meanwhile, road accidents during the downpours took another 185 lives, the SDMA report reveals.
The chaos didn’t stop there. Rescuers reported 487 injuries and 46 people still missing. Livestock suffered hugely too, with more than 29,000 animals, including poultry, losing their lives. Homes took a beating as well: nearly 7,160 houses got fully destroyed, and 11,309 saw partial damage across the state.
Infrastructure damage from this Himachal Pradesh monsoon added up fast. The Public Works Department tallied losses at Rs 2,90,383.8 lakh, while the Jal Shakti Vibhag clocked in at Rs 1,46,385.9 lakh. The power sector faced over Rs 13,946.69 lakh in hits, and sectors like education, health, and rural development also saw major setbacks.
Districts bore the brunt unevenly. Mandi topped the list with 42 rain-related deaths, followed by Kullu and Kangra at 35 each. Shimla counted 23 such losses, Una had 16, and Chamba reported 28.
Farmers faced heartbreak on top of everything else. The monsoon wiped out standing crops worth Rs 2,743.47 lakh in agriculture and Rs 5,164.24 lakh in horticulture, the SDMA noted.
As Himachal Pradesh recovers from one of its worst monsoon seasons in years, authorities keep assessing the full extent of the damage and rolling out relief to those hit hardest.
