On Saturday, Indian Army troops in the Keran sector of Kupwara district stopped a terrorist infiltration attempt and killed two attackers. The operation, called Operation Pimple, was carried out by soldiers of the 21 Grenadiers unit along the Line of Control (LoC).
Late Friday evening, the Grenadiers spotted suspicious movement near the forward‑defended location (FDL) known as Pimple. Reacting quickly, the troops opened fire, sparking a short exchange of small‑arms fire. The soldiers confirmed that both attackers were killed in the engagement.
After the firefight, a large‑scale search operation began in the surrounding area. Commanders are insisting that no infiltrators managed to cross the LoC. The Army has put the region on a 24‑hour alert because intelligence indicates that terrorist handlers on the Pakistani side often try to push attackers into India’s side before the winter snow closes mountain passes.
The Line of Control in context
The 740‑km‑long LoC runs through Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora in the Kashmir Valley and Poonch, Rajouri and part of Jammu in the Jammu division. The LoC is the de‑facto border between India and Pakistan in this area, and it is heavily monitored by Indian Army units.
In addition, the 240‑km International Border (IB)—located in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts—is guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF). Both the Army and BSF guard against terrorist infiltration, drug smuggling, and other unlawful activities that threaten the region.
Counter‑terrorism focus
Jammu and Kashmir’s security forces, including the police and the army, conduct operations in the hinterland to fight terrorism, drug trafficking, hawala money laundering, and related financial crimes. These illicit activities are believed to fund terrorist operations in the valley.
A revised strategy has pushed the forces to target not only terrorists but also their ground support workers and sympathisers, aiming to dismantle the entire terror ecosystem.
