In Patna, Bihar, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir tackled the growing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists on Wednesday. He made it clear that the Congress party supports cleaning up voter rolls but opposes the sudden rollout in Bihar without proper notice.
Mir told reporters that the Election Commission should have launched SIR across India right after the Lok Sabha elections. “People need time to gather their documents,” he said. The party plans to hit the streets and ensure every adult over 18 keeps their voting rights. “No eligible voter should lose out,” Mir added, stressing the need to protect democratic access in Bihar.
This comes amid a heated Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Patna, where leaders slammed the BJP-led central government for eroding India’s democratic foundations. They accused the ruling party and its RSS allies of attacking the Constitution and turning key institutions into tools for political gain.
The CWC resolution highlighted how Parliament has lost its strength, and even constitutional bodies face interference. “The Election Commission, once a pillar of fair elections, now acts like a government echo,” the group stated. They also blasted agencies like the CBI and ED for targeting opposition voices in what they call “political vendettas” against critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The meeting zeroed in on alleged electoral irregularities and vote theft in Bihar, calling it a direct threat to public trust in democracy. Leaders pointed to widespread issues in voter lists that could rig outcomes in favor of the BJP. They praised Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his Voter Adhikar Yatra, a campaign fighting for voter rights and exposing these flaws.
“This yatra shows Congress’s commitment to stand with the poor, backward classes, minorities, and workers who’ve been sidelined,” the resolution said. It warned that stolen votes mean no real legitimacy for any government.
Finally, the CWC raised alarms about SIR in Bihar as a BJP tactic to strip voting rights from vulnerable groups—the poor, laborers, and minorities—who want to boot out the NDA alliance. Without votes, these communities could lose access to essentials like rations, housing, pensions, healthcare, and basic dignity, the party warned. Congress vows to keep pushing back against such moves to safeguard Bihar elections and voter rights nationwide.
