Starc returns as Australia recall Renshaw for ODIs against India; Labuschagne dropped

Australia’s latest white‑ball squad is ready to face India in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, with a mix of experienced players and fresh talent.
Veteran pacer Mitchell Starc, who had not played an ODI since last November, was turned on for the three‑match series that begins on 19 October. The 15‑man squad also marks the return of uncapped batter Matthew Renshaw, who has performed strongly in domestic 50‑over cricket and now gets an international chance.

The side that will bat first in Perth is captained by Mitchell Marsh, who will lead the team again because skipper Pat Cummins is still recovering from lumbar bone stress. Marsh will also head the first two T20s that follow the ODI series. Australia’s T20 squad for the initial matches includes 14 players, with a core group–some will be dropped or rotated as the team builds toward next year’s T20 World Cup.

India’s tour kicks off on 19 October with a 50‑over match at Perth, then moves to Adelaide and Sydney for the remaining games. The T20 series starts on 29 October in Canberra; the first two matches at Manuka Oval and the MCG are already sold out, while the final 50‑over game at the Gabba has fewer than 5,000 tickets left.

Starc, a left‑arm swing bowler, will face an Indian lineup featuring former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He joins the ODI group along with Renshaw, Matt Short and Mitch Owen—all of whom earned their spots after Australia’s 2‑1 loss to the Proteas in the second ODI of last year. Owen and Renshaw could make their ODI debuts against India, having shown promise in the domestic circuit.

The squad drops Aaron Hardie, Matthew Kuhnemann and Marnus Labuschagne. Labuschagne will focus on four‑day cricket for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield before England’s Test series later in the year. Alex Carey missed the first ODI to play in South Australia’s Shield match against Queensland, and Josh Inglis, who recovered from a calf strain, replaced him in the T20 lineup. Nathan Ellis also returned to the side after welcoming his first child. Maxwell remains sidelined from the T20 series following wrist surgery endured last week.

“We’ve named the ODI line‑up and the first two T20s as we manage the squad through the back‑end of the tour and into summer’s Shield games,” said selection chair George Bailey. “Most of the T20 core will stay together to build for the World Cup, while we also prepare certain players for the upcoming Test clash with England.”
