The Third Eye: China’s ambition of edging out US

Xi Jinping’s Big Push at SCO Summit: Aiming to Challenge US Dominance

Chinese President Xi Jinping made waves at the 25th SCO summit in Tianjin, using the event to roll out bold plans that position China as a rising superpower ready to rival the United States. With tensions high over US tariffs on India’s oil deals with Russia, Xi invited Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to a grand military parade in Beijing on September 3. This showcase marked the 80th anniversary of Japan’s WWII surrender and highlighted China’s growing strength as a leader in the anti-US alliance.

In his key speech, Xi painted a vision of a multipolar world where China stands as the top power. He urged India to move past border disputes and team up with China as partners, not rivals, to build a fair, rules-based global order. India shares the idea of a multipolar world but focuses on a multipolar Asia, seeing itself as a strong competitor to China in the region and beyond. Xi’s address at the SCO summit laid out an ambitious roadmap for China to lead the world stage.

Unveiling the Global Governance Initiative

At the summit, Xi launched the Global Governance Initiative, stressing China’s willingness to team up with all nations for a fairer world system. Without naming the US directly, he slammed its Cold War mindset, hegemony, and protectionist moves. He outlined key principles: respecting sovereign equality, following international laws, embracing true multilateralism, putting people first, and focusing on real results.

Xi emphasized that every country—big or small, rich or poor—should have an equal say in global decisions and share the benefits. It’s ironic coming from the leader of a communist nation with state control and one-party rule, but Xi called for more democracy in international relations and stronger voices for developing countries. He drew on ancient civilizations to promote world peace, warned against rules dictated by a handful of nations, and pushed for the United Nations to take a central role.

He also highlighted closing the North-South divide, boosting coordination for effective global actions, and narrowing economic gaps. For the SCO, Xi wanted it to stick to non-alliance and non-confrontation, favoring integration over decoupling.

Belt and Road Boost and Humanitarian Moves

Xi urged SCO members to deepen Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation and promote inclusive economic globalization. This is all part of China’s strategy to use economic power to counter US influence under President Donald Trump, while advancing its military and tech capabilities. The SCO has become China’s key tool for global acceptance—he even announced aid like treating 500 kids with congenital heart disease, 5,000 cataract surgeries, and 10,000 cancer screenings for SCO countries, showing China as a caring global player.

As Eurasia’s largest regional group, the SCO is now a "pillar" for a multipolar world and stronger international democracy, according to Xi. He spoke of peaceful China-India ties to benefit the Global South. Against Trump’s "America First" policies that upset many nations, Xi positioned China as a champion of human development, better lives, and world peace. China sees a chance to rise as the top power amid the US’s slipping global image.

US Reactions and Trump’s Advisor Drama

Trump’s team added fuel to the fire. White House trade advisor Peter Navarro griped about India’s SCO role, while Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross (noted as Howard Lumick in reports) complained that New Delhi wouldn’t open markets to US goods, cut Russian energy buys, or leave BRICS. Navarro even called BRICS trade practices "vultures exploiting the United States." Trump’s milder social media post? "We have lost India, Russia to deep dark China."

But top-level ties stayed strong. On September 10, Trump messaged that he looked forward to chatting with his "very good friend" PM Narendra Modi, confident in successful trade talks. Modi replied that India and the US are "close friends and natural partners," unlocking huge potential together. The takeaway? Advisors sometimes push too hard, but leaders like Trump and Modi set the real diplomatic tone on big geopolitical issues.

India’s Smart Balancing Act in Global Politics

India’s active role in both BRICS and SCO shows PM Modi’s sharp strategy. India notes the US views China—not Russia—as its main rival. It sticks to non-alignment while building ties with all nations, big or small, and pushes for world peace and humanitarian progress as a responsible leader. India’s Quad involvement clearly signals its stance between the US and China.

India confidently manages relations with the US and Russia on equal terms. Believing in a multipolar world order helps it nurture friendships and handle rivals. India opposes a new Cold War, making the Middle East a key focus. Its biggest security worry? The China-Pakistan alliance, which targets India and fuels global terrorism.

India’s national security plan centers on countering these threats, keeping US ties trust-based, maintaining Russia friendship, spotlighting Islamic terrorism in global forums, supporting democracy in Arab states, and boosting its Global South influence where China often blocks progress.

This SCO summit moment underscores how China is aggressively chasing superpower status, while India navigates the shifts with balance and foresight.
