On November 11 in Washington, President Donald Trump told reporters that the U.S. is close to signing a new trade deal with India. He said the agreement will be fair and benefit both sides.
Trump made the comments while watching Vice President John D. Vance swearing in Sergio Gor, the new U.S. ambassador to India. “We’re making a deal with India that’s very different from what we had before,” Trump said. “We’re getting a fair trade deal, and I think we’re close to a deal that’s good for everybody.”
The president praised his relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling the partnership “one of America’s most important international relationships.” In the same tone, Trump highlighted India’s size and history. “India is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations and is the largest country in terms of land,” he added. “Sergio has already met Modi and is helping strengthen this vital partnership.”
Gor was sworn in inside the Oval Office, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in attendance. Vice President Vance congratulated the new ambassador and said, “I love India. I know you will do a great job representing this amazing country.”
Gor thanked President Trump for the nomination and promised to deepen ties. “I’ve been on your side for many years,” he said. “It’s an honor, and I look forward to strengthening the U.S.-India relationship.”
The 38‑year‑old Gor became the youngest U.S. ambassador to India after the Senate confirmed him in October. He previously led the White House Presidential Personnel Office, vetting more than 4,000 positions for the Trump administration.
With the trade deal and a new ambassador in place, the U.S. and India are aiming to expand their strategic and economic partnership, especially as Indian markets grow fast and the Indo‑Pacific region gains strategic importance.
