On October 7 in New York, the 80th UN General Assembly joined forces with Monaco’s Permanent Mission to host a very‑high profile roundtable on compassion. The meeting, called Globalising Compassion: An Ethical Framework for Justice, Equality, Peace and Sustainability, was launched by Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi.
The gathering pulled together a who’s‑who of global leaders – from Nobel winners to heads of state, young activists, artists and policy experts. Their mission: to map a moral roadmap for the 21st century, built on justice, equality, peace and a sustainable future.
Asmita Satyarthi, chief executive of the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion, opened the session with a stark reminder of today’s crises. “A burning world is our problem," she said. “A starving child in Gaza is our problem. Compassion surges when we see that other people’s pain is our own, and we step in to end it.” Her words echoed across the room.
Former President Jose Ramos‑Horta of Timor‑Leste, another 1996 Nobel laureate, joined the chorus, noting how a lack of compassion among the political elite undermines progress. “The ruling classes must act with empathy if they want real change,” he urged.
Princess Sonam Dechen Wangchuck of Bhutan, president of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law, joined the discussion with a call to action. “Now is the time for the world to embrace compassion as the foundation of progress,” she stated.
Kerry Kennedy, president of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights, added that true compassion is active, not passive. “You must be willing to take risks and speak up,” she warned.
Other key voices included Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, former Costa Rican president Laura Chinchilla, Inter-Parliamentary Union secretary‑general Martin Chungong, Nobel laureate Tawakkol Karman of Yemen, Grammy‑winning activist Karman, and industry influencer Brian Kelly of The Points Guy.
These leaders used the platform to push for quicker action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They argued that weaving compassion into international policy can accelerate progress on health, education, climate, and social justice.
The roundtable set a tone of urgency and partnership. By centering empathy in global discussions, participants aim to make policy decisions that reflect real human needs, especially for the most vulnerable. The call to embed compassion is designed to keep the SDG agenda on track and to ensure that equality and peace stay front‑of‑mind as nations rebuild after conflict and climate shocks.
