Bengal: Petitioner’s lawyer to move SC to challenge Calcutta HC order on appointment of primary teachers’ case

Kolkata, Dec 3 (© LatestNewsX) – the Calcutta High Court’s division bench today overturned a previous single‑judge decision that had revoked the appointment of 32,000 primary teachers in state‑run schools.

Representing the petitioners, lawyer Tarunjyoti Tiwari said he would now bring the matter before the Supreme Court. Tiwari, who also sits on the West Bengal BJP’s Legal Cell, is the lead counsel in the case. He added, “I have complete faith in the court. The court has heard all the parties. We had asked for a stay. However, the judge did not grant a stay (the jobs). The judge also spoke about corruption. But the main issue was sentiment. The corruption did not win here. The investigation will continue. We will now go to the Supreme Court.”

The March 2023 ruling had been prompted by petitions from candidates who claimed that several appointees were given recommendations despite scoring far below the ranks required in the recruitment exam. The state government sent the decision to the division bench for reconsideration.

During the single‑bench hearing, Tiwari questioned the entire interview process, arguing that fundamental flaws had led to the cancellation of the teaching posts.

Another lawyer‑politician, Kaustav Bagchi, also a BJP leader, spoke up on social media, saying, “With full respect and deference to the judges, I say that corruption cannot be given legal validity for the sake of sentiment. I can say with confidence that this verdict will not stand. It cannot stand. If this verdict stands, it will create a strange and terrible precedent.”
