Rahul’s broken promise: Cobbler’s gift gathers dust as family demands aid amid Bihar poll push

In the village of Dhesaruwa in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a story that began as a symbol of hope now looks like a forgotten promise. Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader pushing a hard‑back campaign in Bihar, gave a modern shoe‑making machine to 58‑year‑old cobbler Ramchait Mochi in late 2023. The act was photographed and shared widely on social media, and Congress workers called it a breakthrough for Dalit artisans.
Today the machine sits dusty in a corner of the Mochi family’s single‑room house. Ramchait is chronically ill with advanced throat cancer and can barely lift a hand. He lies on a creaky charpoy, surrounded by bills that keep piling up. His son Raghav, who works as a farmhand for only 200–300 rupees a day, has asked Rahul for financial help. “We need about ₹50,000 for treatment. My father idolised you—don’t let him down,” Raghav pleaded.
The family’s struggle echoes a larger story of unmet promises. While Congress builds its Bihar agenda around Dalit empowerment—promising increasing reservations and new welfare funds—the real‑world support for families like the Mochis remains weak. Rahul’s office has not yet responded to requests for help or explanation.
Local leaders are both sympathetic and critical. Village head Arshad says, “He needs proper treatment in a better hospital, not just a broken machine. We have written to Congress representatives, but we hear nothing.” The community’s disappointment is growing, especially as the political race heats up.
BJP spokespersons seized on the story to criticize Rahul. “His promises shine brightly only at first,” one leader said. “Then the machine dusts. We need to audit all such gifts.”
The case of the Mochi family shows how political rhetoric can fall short on the ground. As winter sets in, Raghav worries that the plea will fade into another election footnote. But if the story reaches the right ears, it could spur genuine action: medical care, financial aid and renewed attention to Dalit workers in Uttar Pradesh.
For voters in Bihar and across India, this story reminds them that slogans and gifts must translate into lasting solutions—otherwise elections risk becoming a cycle of unfulfilled promises.
