Patna, Nov 5 – A violent incident shook the Barachatti Assembly constituency in Bihar yesterday, as a Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) politician, sitting MLA Jyoti Manjhi, was attacked while doing her door‑to‑door campaign.
Police say the assailants were unidentified and rushed Manjhi to a nearby hospital where she is receiving treatment. Investigators were on the scene immediately and additional security forces were deployed to keep the area calm. The state police have vowed to take strict action against the perpetrators, but the attackers remain unknown.
The attack comes just before the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections, which will be held on November 6. BJP leaders, who are part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, have condemned the violence and demanded that the culprits be arrested quickly. Supporters of Manjhi are upset, adding to the already tense poll atmosphere.
In other news, a roadshow by Bhojpuri star Pawan Singh created a stir in Rohtas district on Wednesday. Singh was campaigning for Snehlata Kushwaha, the wife of Rashtriya Lok Morcha president Upendra Kushwaha, who is running for the Sasaram Assembly seat. RJD workers began chanting “Pawan Singh Murdabad” as soon as Singh’s convoy reached Tilauthu, sparking confrontation. Similar protests erupted later in Sasaram, where a group of women shouted slogans urging that a man who “does not respect his own wife” should not campaign for a woman candidate.
The roadshow was delayed and shortened, which aggravated supporters and heightened tensions. The second phase of voting, which will include Gaya and Rohtas, is scheduled for November 11.
