The US government shut down on Tuesday after Congress couldn’t agree on a funding bill, leaving many Americans wondering what’s next. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt pointed the finger straight at Democrats in Congress, calling it a clear case of partisan politics.
Leavitt told reporters that House Republicans pushed through a straightforward, nonpartisan bill to keep government funding going until November 21. But almost every Democrat in the Senate voted it down. “This is the exact same bill Democrats approved back in March, just updated for inflation,” she explained. She added that Democrats passed similar clean funding measures 13 times when they controlled Congress during the Biden years.
At the heart of the fight? Democrats want major changes, including protections for healthcare, before they’ll back any funding extension in the Senate. Republicans, on the other hand, insist the simple extension should be enough. Leavitt slammed the Democrats for demanding taxpayer-funded free healthcare for undocumented immigrants, especially with the US national debt hitting $37 trillion. “We can’t afford to pay for healthcare for people who broke the law to enter the country,” she said. “The American people are asking why the government is shut down right now, and the answer is pure partisan politics from the Democrat party.”
Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer fired back in a joint statement, blaming President Donald Trump and Republicans. “After months of making life harder and more expensive for families, Donald Trump and Republicans have now shut down the federal government because they refuse to protect the healthcare of the American people,” they said.
Both sides are digging in, with no quick fix in sight. The shutdown affects federal services, national parks, and more, as talks stall over the latest government funding bill. Congress has a lot at stake as the partisan divide deepens in Washington.
