Tripura jailbreak: 5 officials suspended, 2 fugitives re-arrested; hunt for 4 others continues (Lead)
In Tripura, authorities have suspended five jail officials after six inmates broke out of the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura district. The escape happened early Wednesday morning, sparking a major manhunt that’s still going strong.
The fugitives include five undertrial prisoners and one man serving a life sentence for murder. They attacked a guard with sharp weapons while staff brought them out for breakfast and morning routines. The injured guard, Bedu Miah, is recovering at Dharmanagar District Hospital and remains in stable condition.
Tripura’s Inspector General of Prisons took quick action, suspending Jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya along with warders Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatia, Mohammad Gedu Mia, and Notan Lodh. Officials plan to start disciplinary proceedings against all five soon.
So far, security forces have recaptured two of the escapees. Abdul Patta, arrested earlier under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for drug crimes, got caught Wednesday evening near Dharmanagar police station. Narayan Chandra Datta, a Bangladeshi national nabbed previously under passport laws, turned up Thursday in the same area. That leaves four still on the run: Rahim Ali, Rosan Ali, Nazim Uddin, and Sunil Debbarma.
Police and security teams launched an intense search right after the jailbreak, combing suspected hideouts in North Tripura and nearby areas. North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai even led one of the teams. They’ve alerted all local police stations and security posts in North Tripura and the adjacent Unakoti district.
With the district bordering Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh, officials aren’t taking chances. They’ve asked the Border Security Force to keep a close watch along the India-Bangladesh border to stop any border crossings. All exit points to neighboring states and the international boundary now stand sealed, blocking the fugitives from slipping away.
The Tripura jailbreak has everyone on high alert, and the hunt for the remaining escapees continues around the clock.
