Thiruvananthapuram –
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala is in turmoil after former spokesperson M. S. Kumar revealed large‑scale financial problems inside the party’s cooperative network. He linked these irregularities to the death of K. Anilkumar, a local BJP councillor and cooperative society manager who died by suicide in September.
Kumar posted a detailed Facebook statement accusing senior BJP members of mismanaging cooperative funds. He said that nearly 70 % of borrowers in the cooperative were party workers and that among those who defaulted, 90 % were also BJP members. The post claimed that Anilkumar, who was facing pressure from depositors refusing to repay loans, was driven to despair by the party’s lack of accountability.
Anilkumar, 58, ran a cooperative society in Valiyasala and was found hanging in his ward office on September 20. Police said his suicide note did not name any political figure but pointed to mounting financial pressure. The case has sparked a political debate, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) holding the BJP morally responsible.
In the post, Kumar threatened to reveal the names of those he says owe the society, calling out senior office‑bearers, cell convenors and newer members who joined after gaining central leadership support. He described Anilkumar as a “sincere politician with immense potential” whose “involvement in the cooperative sector and the burden of others’ debts destroyed him.”
Kumar also blamed the media for spreading misinformation that hurt the cooperative’s reputation, saying false reports caused borrowers to stop repayments and depositors to rush withdrawals. He called on the BJP to show real political commitment “by repaying the loans you took,” rather than merely paying floral tributes after a member’s death.
Sources report that BJP state leaders are now in private talks with Kumar to prevent him from releasing the alleged defaulters’ names. The party has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
