ECI to decide on action against teachers in govt schools in West Bengal refusing BLO duties
India’s Election Commission is cracking down on teachers in West Bengal’s government schools who keep turning down their roles as Booth-Level Officers, or BLOs. This comes as the state gears up for a key voter list update and next year’s Assembly elections.
The Chief Electoral Officer in Kolkata plans to send a full report to the Election Commission of India soon. It will detail which teachers have refused these BLO assignments, even though they’re supposed to handle them. Sources close to the matter say the commission will then suggest tough steps, and the CEO’s office will follow through.
Many teachers in state-run schools just won’t take on the job. This persists despite a recent ruling from the Calcutta High Court. Last month, a single-judge bench led by Justice Amrita Sinha said there’s no issue with appointing these teachers as BLOs. The court pointed out that Indian laws clearly allow election duties for educators. During an August 4 hearing, Justice Sinha even noted that teachers might need to work weekends or holidays if it serves the national interest.
Still, the pushback continues, creating headaches for the CEO’s office. They’re trying to assign BLO roles only to permanent state government employees, as the Election Commission directed. But with so many teachers opting out, it’s getting tough to fill the spots.
Adding to the mix, opposition parties in West Bengal have loudly protested against using contractual state workers for BLO duties. Now, the teachers’ reluctance is making things even messier. An insider from the CEO’s office explained: “We’re reporting this to the commission, and we’ll act based on their guidance.”
These BLO roles are crucial for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision of voter lists, set for late October after the festive season. With Assembly elections on the horizon, smooth preparations are key to ensuring fair polls in West Bengal.
