Make ‘Bharat Bandh’ announced by AIMPLB a ‘failure’: Shahabuddin Razvi

In Bareilly, a prominent Muslim cleric named Shahabuddin Razvi is calling on people to ignore the planned ‘Bharat Bandh’ over the Waqf Amendment Act. He wants everyone to make sure the shutdown fails by keeping businesses open and sticking to daily routines.

Razvi specifically asked Muslims not to join the program organized by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). “I request all Muslims not to take part in the AIMPLB’s programme,” he said. He pointed out that politicians are turning the Waqf Amendment Act debate into a religious issue, and things like provocative ‘I Love Muhammad’ posters could spark trouble. “Do not pay attention to the bandh; protect yourselves from such tactics,” Razvi added. His goal? Help maintain peace and communal harmony in these tense times.

The AIMPLB had originally set the Bharat Bandh for October 3 as part of their ongoing protest against the Waqf Amendment Act. But on Wednesday, they decided to postpone it after an emergency meeting led by President Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani.

Spokesperson Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas explained the reason: religious festivals for other communities are happening on that date in several states. “Reports indicated that religious festivals of our fellow citizens are scheduled to take place on October 3 in several regions. Keeping this in mind, the Board held consultations and unanimously resolved to postpone the bandh,” Ilyas said.

Don’t worry, though—the fight against the Waqf Amendment Act isn’t stopping. The AIMPLB stressed that their nationwide agitation will keep going with rallies, public meetings, and signature drives already underway. “The Bharat Bandh stands postponed, but Insha’Allah, new dates will be announced shortly. The movement against the anti-Waqf law will go on as planned,” Ilyas noted.

The original plan called for the shutdown from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 3, with shops, offices, and businesses closing—but hospitals, medical services, and pharmacies would stay open. Now, with the postponement, expect a fresh date soon.

The AIMPLB leads this campaign because they believe the Waqf Amendment Act hurts the independence of Waqf institutions and Muslim community rights. They’ve already held protests across India in phases, and this Bharat Bandh was meant to be a big step in their pushback.
