TN BJP chief Nainar Nagendran visits Karur hospital as stampede death toll rises to 39

Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur on Sunday to support families hit hard by a deadly stampede. The visit came after a tragic crowd crush at a political rally for actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Saturday, which claimed 39 lives.

Nagendran checked on the injured patients and consoled relatives as hospital staff handed over the victims’ bodies following postmortems. In a show of respect, the Tamil Nadu BJP unit announced it would cancel all party events for the next two days. “This heart-wrenching tragedy in Karur leaves an irreplaceable loss,” the state unit said in a statement. “We have no words to console the grieving families. Let’s pray for the full recovery of those still receiving treatment.”

The Karur stampede happened amid excitement at Vijay’s rally, turning a lively gathering into chaos. State Director of Medical Education Suganthy Rajakumari shared the latest updates with reporters. “We’ve handled 39 bodies so far, and 52 people needed hospital care,” she said. “Only two patients are in critical condition and on ventilators right now. We’ll wrap up all postmortems by noon and release the bodies to families. The government is stepping in with accommodation, food, and other essentials to help everyone through this.”

BJP leader Tamilisai Soundarajan also headed to Karur early that morning to offer hands-on support. She urged people to stay sensitive and avoid turning the situation into sensational news. “I’m here to stand with the distressed families,” Soundarajan told . “We’ll provide whatever they need—blood donations, medical aid, or emotional support. I’ve asked our local district leaders to pitch in fully. Our state president is arriving too. Even Union Home Minister Amit Shah called Chief Minister MK Stalin to check on things and offer central government help. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his deep sorrow with the nation.

On the law enforcement side, Additional Director General of Police S. Davidson Devasirvatham confirmed a case has been filed over the Tamil Nadu stampede. “We’re kicking off a preliminary investigation into how 39 people lost their lives,” he told reporters. Authorities aim to uncover what went wrong at the Vijay rally and prevent future tragedies like this Karur incident.
