In a big win for farmers just before the festive rush, India’s Modi government has approved a major boost to the minimum support price (MSP) for key crops starting in the 2026-27 season. This move, decided in a Union Cabinet meeting, comes right on the heels of Dussehra and during the Navratri celebrations, showing the government’s focus on supporting the “annadatas” who feed the nation.
BJP Punjab spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal hailed the decision as a historic step that farmers across the country are cheering. “It’s like the recent GST rate cuts that eased things for everyday folks during festivals,” Baliawal said. “Now, the Centre is stepping up for farmers with this MSP hike, ensuring better earnings at a time when they need it most.”
The standout change? Wheat’s MSP jumps by a record Rs 160 per quintal, from Rs 2,425 last year to Rs 2,585. That could mean an extra Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,000 per acre for wheat growers, directly padding their pockets. Other rabi crops get solid increases too: barley rises from Rs 1,980 to Rs 2,150 per quintal, gram from Rs 5,650 to Rs 5,875, lentils from Rs 6,700 to Rs 7,000, rapeseed and mustard from Rs 5,950 to Rs 6,200, and safflower from Rs 5,940 to Rs 6,540.
Baliawal pointed out that these MSP revisions will boost farm incomes and bring some extra festive cheer to rural families. He stressed that raising farmers’ earnings has always been a top goal for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, and this action proves their steady commitment to the sector’s growth and well-being.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan shared the news straight from the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Modi. Alongside the MSP hike for rabi crops, the government greenlit the National Pulses Mission to ramp up production and support. “On behalf of farmers, I thank the Prime Minister,” Chouhan said. He added that these steps will deliver lasting gains in food security, nutritional health, farmer welfare, and overall agricultural output.
Chouhan highlighted how the Modi government keeps farmers’ needs front and center, channeling resources and programs to match their priorities. With festivals like Dussehra kicking off, this MSP increase feels like a timely gift, helping secure brighter prospects for India’s farming community.
