PM Modi, Bhutan’s Fourth King discuss bilateral ties, spiritual and cultural bonds (Ld)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Thimphu on Wednesday to meet Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and the two leaders talked about many key areas that shape India‑Bhutan ties.

Modi sent heartfelt congratulations to the king on his 70th birthday and wished him good health and prosperity. The Indian Foreign Ministry said the prime minister thanked the king for his guidance in deepening friendship between the two Himalayan neighbours. Both leaders highlighted shared spiritual and cultural ties that bring their people closer together.

During the visit, Modi joined the king in a Kalachakra initiation ceremony at Changlimithang Stadium, part of the Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu. The prayers were led by Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s chief abbot.

After two days in Bhutan, Modi returned to New Delhi, concluding a trip that underlined India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.

The pair also tackled practical cooperation. They discussed energy, capacity building, connectivity, technology, defence and security. Later, they jointly inaugurated the 1,020‑MW Punatsangchhu‑II hydroelectric project, a big boost to the energy partnership between the two countries.

In a social‑media post, Modi said he had a “very good meeting” with the king, covering the full range of India‑Bhutan relations. He added that India is proud to be a key partner in Bhutan’s development journey.

To celebrate the king’s birthday, Modi and the king sought blessings from Buddha’s holy relics at Thimphu’s Tashichhodzong. The relics were brought from India as a gesture of friendship during the Royal Government of Bhutan’s Global Peace Prayer Festival.

Through these talks and joint projects, India and Bhutan are strengthening ties that blend cultural heritage with modern cooperation.
