In Shimla, Education Minister Rohit Thakur told journalists that Himachal Pradesh’s schools are getting better under the three‑year‑old Congress government.
He said the state has pulled ahead in education, hiring more than 7,000 teachers and principals for schools, colleges and other posts. “We’ll add thousands more when the list is ready,” he added.
The minister highlighted that empty classrooms have shrunk dramatically. In 2022, 350 schools had no teachers. Today fewer than 100 do. Single‑teacher schools fell from 3,600 to about 2,000.
Despite heavy losses from recent natural disasters, Thakur noted that the central government has given limited help. He reminded listeners that Himachal Pradesh has now achieved full literacy.
When asked about the delay of panchayat elections, Thakur said the move was purely administrative, not political. “BJP claims are unfounded,” he said. “Elections will happen once normalcy returns.”
He also criticized opposition parties for merely making political noise. “We hope the Centre will boost our recovery work,” he urged.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu echoed the minister’s stance. He said the BJP’s push to postpone elections was a distraction. The CM blamed ongoing disaster damage – especially road issues – for holding back election preparations. “When roads to panchayats open, elections will follow,” he said.
The conversation reflected the state’s focus on education gains, disaster relief, and a delayed but inevitable panchayat election schedule.
