Working Americans will soon get ‘very large refunds’ of up to $2K per household: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that working Americans can expect “very large refunds” of around $1,000 to $2,000 per household in early 2026, thanks to tax‑cut measures in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. He estimates the total will be somewhere between $100‑$150 billion, so each household could see a windfall of up to roughly $2,000. The bill’s provisions—such as automatic deductibility options and the elimination of a tax on tips—were highlighted as key drivers of the upcoming payouts.
Because most employees have not yet adjusted their tax withholdings, the refunds are expected to arrive next year. Once the money’s in, Bessent urged workers to lower their withholding rates so that less tax is taken out of each paycheck. In doing so, they’ll receive a “real increase” in their take‑home pay.
The timing coincides with comments from White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, who also reported that Americans could see an additional $1,600 to $2,000 next year largely from these tax refunds.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which passed in July, has drawn criticism for favoring the wealthy while cutting or reducing essential programs such as Medicaid and food stamps.
