On her centenary, Dr. Lakshmi Bai donated Rs 3.4 crore of her hard‑earned savings to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the national institute, a move that quickly attracted national headlines and widespread acclaim.
She entered the field of medicine as a student in the inaugural 1945 batch of Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack, finishing her MBBS in 1950. Her career began as a government physician in Sundargarh before she served as a professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Burla, Cuttack, and Berhampur medical colleges, retiring after a distinguished tenure. Notably, she was the first woman doctor in Odisha to master laparoscopic surgery and pursued advanced studies in women’s health in the United States.
