South Korea Probes Yoon Suk Yeol’s Martial Law Drama: Key Aides Grilled
In a major update from Seoul, South Korea’s special counsel team has kicked off a fresh investigation into former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s controversial martial law push. On Thursday, they questioned Chung Jin-suk, Yoon’s ex-chief of staff and one of his closest allies, for the first time over his role in the December chaos.
Chung showed up at special counsel Cho Eun-suk’s office, where investigators dug into his actions around Yoon’s short-lived martial law declaration. Reports from Yonhap news agency reveal that Chung joined a key Cabinet meeting right before Yoon dropped the bombshell decree. He even met Yoon in a military control room just hours before another Cabinet session lifted the order the next day.
Prosecutors suspect Chung tried to cover tracks by deleting files and records from shared computers at the presidential office—moves that could point to evidence tampering in the Yoon Suk Yeol martial law case.
The probe doesn’t stop there. South Korea’s defence ministry suspended three top generals from the Defence Counterintelligence Command on the same day. Officials say this step helps uncover the full story behind the martial law attempt and keeps the military steady. "We’re suspending them temporarily to check facts and stabilize operations," the ministry told reporters.
This unit seems to have been at the heart of the action. Its former boss, Yeo In-hyung, faces charges like perjury and leaking military secrets. He’s accused of dispatching troops to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission during the crisis.
With these suspensions, all seven generals at the Defence Counterintelligence Command are now off duty. The South Korean government plans to shift its responsibilities to other agencies and shut it down entirely, as outlined in a policy update from Tuesday.
As the Yoon Suk Yeol martial law investigation heats up, more details could emerge about what went down in those tense December days. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding South Korea political scandal.
