‘Mann Ki Baat’: PM Modi shares how Manipur youth’s solar mission lights up hundreds of homes

In a Sunday broadcast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated a Manipur entrepreneur who’s lighting up hundreds of homes with solar energy
During his monthly radio talk “Mann Ki Baat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the story of Moirangthem Seth, a Manipur resident under 40 who has addressed a long‑standing electricity problem in his village.
“There is an old saying: ‘Where there is a will, there is a way.’ This saying has been proved true once again by a young man from Manipur, Moirangthem Seth,” Modi explained. “The remote area of Manipur where Shriram Moirangthem lived had a major electricity problem. To overcome this challenge, he focused on local solutions and found this solution in solar power.”
The PM noted that Manipur’s sunny climate makes solar power a natural fit, and Moirangthem seized the opportunity. The initiative has seen solar panels installed in hundreds of homes, turning an energy‑scarce area into a bright, self‑sufficient community.
Besides powering homes, the solar projects have improved critical services and livelihoods. “The special thing is that he has used solar power to improve health care and livelihood,” Modi said. “Today, owing to his efforts, many health centres in Manipur are also getting solar power.”
Women, fishermen, and local artists have all felt the benefits. “The women of Manipur have also benefited a lot from this endeavor. Local fishermen and artists have also been helped through this,” the PM added.
Modi also reminded listeners of the national PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana—the government’s flagship rooftop solar scheme. Under this program, families receive financial assistance of roughly ₹75,000 to ₹80,000 to cover the cost of installing rooftop solar panels. The plan aims to supply up to 300 units of free electricity each month to about ten million households, cutting power bills and boosting community energy independence. Participants can even earn extra income by selling excess surplus electricity back to the grid.
“My personal work with Moirangthem gives new momentum to every solar power campaign,” Modi concluded, wishing the young entrepreneur continued success through Mann Ki Baat.
