India and Myanmar hold Annual Defence Dialogue, discuss capacity building and training

India and Myanmar just wrapped up their second annual defence dialogue in Naypyitaw, focusing on key areas like military training, building stronger capabilities, help after recent earthquakes, and cultural exchange visits. The meeting happened on Thursday, bringing together top officials from both sides.

India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh led the Indian delegation, while Major General Kyaw Ko Htike, Myanmar’s Chief of Armed Forces for Training, co-chaired the talks. According to India’s Ministry of Defence, the discussions aimed to boost cooperation in these vital fields. They shared an update on X, highlighting how this dialogue strengthens ties between the two neighbors.

This comes on the heels of a high-level meeting last month between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the State Security and Peace Commission. The two leaders chatted on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. They reviewed India-Myanmar relations, touching on trade, development projects, defence and security, and even border management.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s growth needs. He also voiced hopes for fair and inclusive elections in Myanmar soon, involving everyone at the table. Modi stressed that India backs a peace process owned and led by Myanmar, with dialogue as the only path forward. Plus, he pointed out how advancing joint connectivity projects—like roads and infrastructure—will bring people closer and align with India’s Act East policy for better regional ties.

India and Myanmar share deep roots in religion, language, and ethnicity, which fuel their partnership. Under India’s Act East and Neighbourhood First policies, the countries are ramping up collaboration. They have regular forums for government talks, and their defence and security cooperation has grown steadily over the years. This latest dialogue shows both nations are committed to building on that momentum.
