Can’t give excuses, but rings of fire cause disturbance: Chakravarthy on India’s dropped catches woes

India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy isn’t making excuses for the team’s dropped catches in recent cricket matches, but he hinted that the bright lights at Dubai International Stadium might be throwing players off. In the Asia Cup Super Fours, Indian fielders have struggled to hold onto chances under those stadium lights, especially during night games.

Take the thrilling six-wicket win over Pakistan—India dropped four catches and made a few fielding errors that highlighted their shaky defense. The issues carried over to Wednesday’s clash with Bangladesh, where opener Saif Hassan got four lifelines from the Indian fielders. They let him off at scores of 40, 65, 66, and 67. Finally, on the fifth try, Axar Patel stepped up and dismissed him for 69 off 51 balls from Jasprit Bumrah in the 19th over.

So far in the tournament, India has dropped 12 catches, putting their fielding efficiency at just 67.5 percent—the second-worst among all teams. Chakravarthy stressed how crucial it is to grab those opportunities, especially with the finals on the line. “You can’t give excuses at this level,” he told reporters after India’s 41-run victory over Bangladesh. “As a team, we have to start catching those because we’ll be qualifying for the finals. We should be taking these catches, but definitely, if you ask me about the rings of fire, it comes in the eye, something. It is a little bit of disturbance.”

India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav kept things light after the second win over Pakistan, joking about the fielding coach T Dilip. “The fielding coach has emailed the boys with butter on their fingers to appear before him,” Yadav quipped, poking fun at the “butterfingers” moments.

Chakravarthy added that T Dilip didn’t say much after the last game, but expect some strong words this time. “It is a mission to the World Cup. We have to pick up our fielding, and definitely, the fielding coach has a lot to say. Last match, he didn’t say much, but this match, I think he will have a lot to say.”

On a brighter note, the 34-year-old Chakravarthy shone with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 29 runs in his four overs. Despite the fielding lapses, India’s bowlers fired on all cylinders to defend 169 and bowl Bangladesh out for 127, securing another key Asia Cup win.
