Madurai airport beefed up security after a bomb threat was sent by e‑mail.
On Thursday, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) worked with Tamil Nadu police to patrol the airport and carry out thorough checks of every vehicle that entered the site.
Sniffer dogs roamed the parking lots and passenger areas while bomb‑detection experts inspected cars and trucks. The Airport Director said the threat, which claimed a bomb had been placed inside the airport, was reported to the Madurai District Collector and the Commissioner of Police.
All vehicles were held for inspection by the bomb disposal squad before being allowed inside. Search teams scanned the arrival hall, the gates and the public gathering points, giving the airport’s staff and travelers extra assurance of their safety.
Earlier in the week, a similar warning was sent to the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India’s most famous shrines that attracts thousands of devotees daily. The email told the Director‑General of Police’s office that a bomb had been planted in the temple’s sanctum.
Police, bomb disposal officers and sniffer dogs then conducted an exhaustive search inside the temple, looking at the shrine of Goddess Amman and Lord Swami, the Golden Flag Mast, the free‑meal hall, the temple tank and every entrance tower. They also checked areas where visitors might leave their bags, such as the mobile‑phone deposit counters and the coconut stalls outside.
After about three hours of inspections, no explosive devices were found and officials confirmed that the bomb threat was a hoax.
The incident highlights the heightened security measures at Madurai airport and the Meenakshi Amman Temple after receiving bomb‑threat emails. The authorities remain on alert, but travelers can rest assured that thorough checks have taken place to keep the city’s key sites safe.
