28-year-old dad of 4, dog die after fishing boat capsizes on Mississippi River: ‘Huge and immense void’
Last week a fishing boat flipped on the Mississippi River near Monticello, Minnesota, claiming the life of 28‑year‑old Tyler Tasche and his black Pomeranian, Bonnie. The sharply‑angled spillway in the river made the boat drift too close, and as Tasche tried to turn it around, the vessel capsized and threw everyone into the water.
Tasche was on the river with his grandfather, Mark Tasche, 66, his younger brother Tristian, 18, and the family dog. Only Mark was wearing a life jacket, a small detail that mattered. The life‑jacket wearer reached the shore safely, and Tristian quickly flipped the overturned boat, but by that point Tyler was already gone.
Rescue crews from the nearby Xcel Energy power plant were the first on the scene. Deputies delivered life‑saving treatment to Tyler, but it was too late. WCCO reports that his body was recovered by the plant staff, and the sheriff’s office confirmed the fatal outcome. Bonnie also succumbed to the accident.
Mark Tasche told reporters he will never go on a boat again. “I don’t know that I’ll ever fish again,” he said, “and I would rather Tyler had survived.” He added, “If I could change places with him, laying on that cold slab, I would do it.”
Tasche leaves a wife and four children, aged five to ten, and a stay‑at‑home father who cared for his autistic daughter. “He was a huge help to everyone,” Mark said, underscoring his community’s loss.
The incident has sparked a broader discussion about safety on the Mississippi River and the importance of life jackets during recreational boating trips.
