Mexican national executed US teen hostage in Tijuana while family scrambled to pay $3K or meth ransom
A Mexican citizen who abducted and murdered an 18‑year‑old San Diegan just after the teen’s senior year was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.
Brian Alexis Patron Lopez, 24, is convicted of killing Miguel Anthony Rendon on May 30, 2020. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, the attacker met the family’s demands for up to $3,000 or methamphetamine before ultimately shooting the teen.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge admonished the killer and allowed family members to testify. “Every day I wake up with pain that will never go away. I want the defendant to carry the weight of what he did the rest of his life,” one relative said.
Judge William Hayes told Patron, “You literally walked the victim to his death.” He followed up, “You executed him, turned around, and you left [him] with trash on the hill.”
The case details that Patron snatched Rendon from his hotel room in Tijuana in 2020, dragged him into a waiting car, then drove him to the killer’s neighborhood where the hostage was beaten and tied up.
Police video showed the kidnapper demanding money or drugs over video calls while the teen’s mother, Emma Medrano, tried to negotiate release. “My heart just almost stopped, he was tied up and bloody with his face. He could barely talk,” Medrano told KSHB in 2022.
The ordeal ended about a day later when Rendon was found dead on a deserted hillside, shot to death as his mother continued to try to pay the ransom. Her son’s body was recovered and returned from Mexico in a cardboard box two years after the incident, and a former family friend noted that he had planned to join the Marines after graduating from Hoover High School.
Surveillance footage of the kidnapping was presented at trial. In addition to the life sentence, Patron received a 35‑year term for hostage‑taking resulting in death, all of which will run concurrently.
