‘Red-letter day for Indian women’s cricket’: Arun Dhumal lauds historic World Cup triumph

Navi Mumbai, Nov. 3 – In a moment that will be remembered for years, India’s women lifted their first-ever Cricket World Cup crown, beating South Africa by 52 runs in a final that felt like a mini‑championship party held right in front of their own fans.

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal called the win a “red‑letter day” for Indian women’s cricket, comparing it to the 1983 victory that sparked the men’s team’s rise to glory. “It’s a triumph that will push women’s cricket in India to new heights,” he told reporters in Mumbai.

Harmanpreet Kaur led the team to victory with an emotional victory after failing to get the winning runs in the 1983 men’s final. The 29‑year‑old captain inspired her side with fiery determination and a hard‑work attitude that matched the excitement around the match.

India posted a solid 298 for 7 in the final, the second‑highest score in a Women’s ODI World Cup final. A 100‑run opening partnership set the tone, and Shafali Verma made 87, while Deepti Sharma steadied the middle overs with a 58. Richa Ghosh added 34 to keep the target realistic.

South Africa chased 299, and at one point the Proteas seemed on track. But a breakthrough from Deepti Sharma changed everything. After she removed Annerie Dercksen, the team collapsed from 209 for 5 to 246 all out. India grabbed the final 52‑run cushion to seal the title.

South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, had an excellent 101, but the South African bowlers struggled to hold the bat in hand. Deepti Sharma’s match‑defining spell of 5 wickets for 39 sealed the win for India. Shafali Verma and Sree Charani also chipped in with key wickets to finish the game.

Other South African bowlers had moments of brilliance. Ayabonga Khaka took 3 wickets for 58, while Nonkululeko Mlaba, Nadine de Klerk, and Chloe Tryon each claimed a wicket to keep the Indians under pressure.

With this historic win, India becomes a double‑world‑champion in cricket. The victory is a huge boost for women’s cricket in the country, inspiring a new generation of girls who now see that an Olympic‑level dream can be realised at home.
